Pete’s analysis of the Republican Big, Bad Bill should be amplified by a big, positive response. The “MAGA” movement should be attacked like the metastatic cancer that it is—its inherent cruelty-as-a-policy must be replaced by MAKA, “Make America Kind Again,” or MACA, “Make America Care Again.” instead of longing for an older version of an America that never was, we need a newer version of America, one that we have never quite been but *could be* if we will it: not a nation of amoral billionaires but a nation united for the common good—less Jeff Bezos, more Mayor Pete.

We face the Big Beautiful Bill in Congress. We need to let each of our representatives and senators know we oppose a vote for this bill (in any of its forms with the 2017 tax cut). Let them know that you will not ever get over it if they vote for the bill.

read:

Senator Chris Murphy just sent out this report from the Senate Floor: He specifies what each American can do, pronto. He says we do not have the luxury of waiting until mid-terms or 2 years at the rate the dismantling and deletions of our programs have taken place.

Last night in the Senate, something really important happened. Republicans forced us to debate their billionaire bailout budget framework. We started voting at 6 PM because they knew doing it in the dark of night would minimize media coverage. And they do not want the American people to see how blatant their handover of our government to the billionaire class is.

So I want to explain what happened last night and what we did to fight back. The apex of Republicans’ plan to turn over our government to their wealthy cronies is a giant tax cut for billionaires and corporations. And they plan to pay for it with cuts to programs that working people rely on. Popular and necessary programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP, are all being targeted. In order to pass the tax cut, Republicans have to go through a series of procedural steps. Last night, they took the first step which requires them to pass an outline of their plan, but with it, any senator can offer as many amendments as we want. So my Democratic colleagues and I did just that.

Now, we knew that Republicans would largely unanimously oppose them, but we had two objectives here. One, Republicans were forced to put their opinion on record — many for the first time — on the most corrupt parts of Trump and Musk’s agenda. Two, as I’ve been saying, I am going to make every process and procedure as slow and painful as possible for as long as my colleagues choose to ignore the constitutional crisis happening before our eyes.

So what did we propose? We proposed no tax cuts for anyone who makes a billion dollars a year. We made them vote on whether or not Elon Musk and DOGE should have limitless access to Americans’ personal data. We made them vote on whether to protect IVF and require insurers to cover it. Every single amendment Democrats proposed was shot down. On almost every single amendment, Republicans universally opposed it. Every Republican voted against our proposal to prevent more tax cuts for billionaires. The corruption and theft is happening in the open here.

The whole game for Republicans is taking your money and giving it to the wealthiest corporations and billionaires — even if it means kicking your parents out of a nursing home or turning off Medicaid for the poorest children. They know what they are doing is deeply unpopular. They are offering a tax cut to the most wealthy that is 850 times larger than what they are offering working people. Oh and by the way, any tax cuts for working people are going to be washed out by higher costs for basic necessities, like health care and food. It’s a fundamental injustice.

Thanks to your pressure and support, many of my Democratic colleagues have joined my effort to do everything we can to make sure they cannot destroy democracy and steal your money in the dark of the night. We are being loud about what is happening. I’m going to continue to grind the gears of Congress down as much as possible to make it that much harder and slower to get away with this corruption. That’s why the votes lasted until nearly 5 AM.

DO NOT PRESS SHARE. JUST COPY THE ENTIRE POST AND PASTE IT ON YOUR OWN WALL.

This is a five-alarm fire. I don’t think we have two years to plan and fight back. I think we have months. It’s still in our power to stop the destruction of our democracy with mass mobilization and effective opposition from elected officials. So we can’t miss any opportunity to take advantage of opportunities to put Republicans on the record and shine a light on what is happening.

And you have a role to play in this as well. I need you to amplify what’s happening, support the leaders who are fighting for you to make sure they can continue speaking truth to power against Musk and Trump’s billionaire cronies, and show up at rallies and town halls. Use every tool at your disposal to send a message loud and clear about how you expect my colleagues to lead and fight in this moment.

Every best wish,

US Senator Chris Patrick Murphy

All of the GOP are worthless and have no decency or respect. They don't have the hard-working middle and lower class in anything in the "Big Beautiful Bill" that only thinks of the rich. Shame on all of you! This is NOT how our country was established in 1776.

MAGAs and Republicans share common traits, and among them are: a distrust of education, a hated of science and a complete lack of empathy.

They are politically, economically, sociologically and historically ignorant.

I think you meant sadist, but it also IS the saddest bill I can recall in my 63 voting years and I've never missed one! I had to wait for age 21 to begin voting, then it was changed to 18 - and public opinion, protests and outrage caused it. During the VietNam war it was old enough to die, but not old enough to vote!?! And pressure got it changed. Keep protesting, keep bugging your representatives even if they seem to be ignoring it. We CAN change the outcome.

Please do get in touch with your Republican Senators now. Expand full comment
Allen B from MD's avatar

"Silencers" do not make the gunshot silent, and those that believe they do have been watching too much TV. The correct term is "suppressor" in which the sound is suppressed, but is still quite audible. Suppressed sound also relies on the ammunition used. Most firearm rounds are supersonic, traveling faster than she speed of sound. Just like in jet planes, that projectile makes a sonic boom as it travels. A suppressor can't do anything about that. A suppressor reduces (not eliminates) the sound of the expanding gasses used to propel a projectile. You still hear the sonic boom. The only way to suppress the sound even further is to use specially made "subsonic rounds) that travel slower than the speed of sound.

anyone who wants to preserve their hearing. it's not hollywood "john wick" style hitman who have gun fights in public spaces. (that is catagorically B.S.) it simply reduces the volume from around 150dB (very dangerous for unprotected ears) to levels that don't rupture ear drums. there is nothing about supressing a sound that make a gun more deadly. it actually robs velocity and distance of the fired round because it's asorbing energy. I personally think they should be mandatory for hunters to not spook and drive game. (the bill also points to still requiring a FBI background check like every legit firearms purchase)

Expand full comment
Allen B from MD's avatar

I would suggest you visit a firing range to see, or rather hear. Any responsible firearm owner goes to the range to practice their firearm handling skills and accuracy/precision. I go at least monthly. We all wear over-the-ear hearing protection currently to protect our hearing, but that does not reduce the sound level for those surrounding the range, especially outdoor ranges. Neighbors who move in decades after a range is established ( when there were no neighbors) then call and complain about the noise. It's kind of like folks moving next to the airport complaining about the noise. It becomes endless nuisance noise complaints to the police that have much more important things to handle.

PETE, IF YOU WERE ELECTED PRESIDENT WOULD YOU SUPPORT WHAT I HAVE OUTLINED 100%? 🇺🇸THE PEOPLE DECLARE; AMERICA BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE

We are the rightful owners. The government is our employee. And justice is long overdue.

We, the People of the United States of America, hereby declare that:

• The government is not our ruler, but our employee — hired, funded, and directed by us, the sovereign citizens of America.

• For too long, that employee has acted against our will, against our interests, and in service to corporate and financial masters who have bought the law, corrupted the courts, and captured our democracy.

• The fruits of our labor have been stolen, our families buried in debt, our bodies broken by stress, and our dreams deferred — all the while; a corrupted government, protected by corrupted attorneys, enriched its donors, protected its cronies, and silenced its critics.

• We have been denied the most basic human guarantees: Free health, Free education, housing, and dignity — not because we can’t afford them, but because greed & corruption has stood in the way.

Today, We the People Say:

✅ We are the owners of this nation — not banks, not billionaires, not politicians and not the corrupted attorneys.

✅ The American government is our employee, and our Public Servants will serve us, or be fired, or indicted, convicted and imprisoned.

✅ We grant ourselves the bonus we were always owed:

• Free health care

• Free education

• No more Income Taxes if you earn less than $1,000,000.00

• Debt-free lives

• A stable home and no property taxes on our personal residences.

• A living wage

• Time to raise our children, care for our elders, the children, the poor, the middle class, the rich as well, the sick, and our Great Veterans.

• Equal rights for everyone. We are a secular Nation. You have the Right to worship your religion, or not believe in a religion, this is a must for America to Prevail as a Democratic Country, with a Democratic Government .

• A Woman’s body belongs to the Woman; The Woman makes every decision about her body.

• Control of our own futures & spread our happiness and prosperity to the World!

• Like China, America will print our money with no National Debt, & we will retire The Federal Reserve Banking Act.

✅ And we say never again will we be ruled by fear, trapped by excessive debt, or sold off to the highest bidder.

This is not revolution — this is our reward for developing a great Democracy and our hard work.

This is not utopia — this is justice.

This is not theory — this is what happens when the people remember they are the sovereign power in a free nation.

We are not asking.

We are not pleading.

We are restoring what is ours.

And we will never give it back.

Will the parliamentarian be able to remove some of these? They aren’t related to the budget, so doesn’t the Byrd rule make them moot?

The parliamentarian has already removed many things from this bill.

The entire bill is a mess. It needs to be canned completely and individual pieces introduced so there can be transparency and debate.

Unfortunately most people including myself do not know what at all of what is in the bill. Isn't it over a thousand pages long? And even if we all sat down to read it how many of us could possibly actually understand what it says like you do? You bring up very good points all of the time...

Well the biggies it will cut snap ebt Medicaid Medicare meals on wheels. School lunch programs. It will cost the states both red n blue. It will shut down nursing homes n hospitals especially rural ones. All health will be effected as six million will be without insurance n will rely on emergency rooms when they are out of choices. N people will die. But the Republicans don't seem to care Abt granny in the nursing home or a disabled person who needs their meds. Or poor kids going to school hungry n thus not learning.

Also...

It does things like let the national park lands be sold to corporations to drill baby drill or any other thing like build a Trump hotel in Yosemite.

It makes it legal to use cancer causing asbestos again. Who the f put that in??

On the legal front its harder to be a whistleblower

And the government can ignore court orders n the rule of law

N as you just stated it's 1000 pages long sooooo there is a bunch of other slime stuff

All in the name of giving rich folks a tax break

So absolutely not shrinking any of the Uber debt we have

I JUST read about half an hour ago that a big part of the Medicaid Cuts were deemed illegal by the parliamentarian. The only problem is why would he adhere to protocol and listen to the parliamentarian when he doesn't even listen to the Supreme Court or anybody else. Yes you are exactly right people will die. Children elderly, and guess those who die on the way to a distant hospital because they're local hospital has been forced to close. And yet the Republicans make comments like….” well everybody dies” and McConnell (who I think should just go home and stay home) who said regarding the Medicaid cuts, “oh ,people will get over the Medicaid cuts”… well yes I guess I can see his point. If you're dead you won't care anymore. They are Beyond sick and I don't mean physically. Oh yes and you mentioned the asbestos issue but let's get crazy nutso about some red dye in food. I don't have much and I'm not saying I am right but it sure seems like all they're trying to do is cull the herd. Oh this one just popped into my head. I saw Jasmine Crockett mention this or maybe someone else…..”tax credits for tanning beds”. Personally I can understand why the orange man wants that right at the top of the list.🙄🙄🙄😡

😂😂👏👏👏👍 thanks for the laughter. Been missing it. I read above here someplace the tax cuts for tanning beds may have been or will be cut. I could be wrong tho. But if I read it right —- Awe - poor prez has to still use his orange makeup !!!! Ugh Doesn’t do a thing for the 79-year old man!

I think everyone is trying to get out the word to get people to look into the bill itself or any summary of the bill as it is 1,000 pages of disgusting cuts to 90%+ of Americans while rewarding the 1%-10% of rich people.

Pete and all, pretty much everything in the BBBill concerns me, but I think the thing that worries me the most, which not many people seem to be talking about, is the small section that makes it impossible for courts - any court - to hold the president in contempt or use restraining orders against him. If the courts are unable to have any restraining abilities to rein in the president's capricious actions, we are finished as far as I'm concerned. The cuts in services and funding are horrible, yes, absolutely, but this puts an end to any checks and balances remaining to us.
